Unlocking an iPhone is a bad idea. Apple has released updates to its software that effectively break the phone for you if you unlock it. If you plan to never update the phone’s software, then it’s fine to buy unlocked, but if you do update it so that you can continue to get new things for it, then it’s a bad idea. When the unlocked phones were updated they were turned into bricks; the functions no longer worked. It will work with Telstra or what have you if unlocked, but there’s always a risk that Apple will release another software update that will cause irreversible damage to the phone. It voids the warranty and if it breaks, they are not obligated to fix it.

Don’t listen to that guy, the iPhone also tried to have it to it was unlockable and said there was no way for it to be done–and it was. There is always going to be someone offering those same updates for you on your phone, so don’t listen to him. Unlocking it means you can bring it to another GSM carrier (T-Mobile).
I would look into research on to WHY you’re getting the iPhone excatly, because there are better phones out there. I would spend my money on a better phone (and a company that has been doing it longer) and just get the Apple iPod Touch..does everything the iPhone does but make phone calls.

Also, there is so many loop holes on the iPhone that even if it breaks and it isn’t unlocked they don’t fix it unless you pay them.

yes, it will work on your local network carrier if you’ve get unlocked iphone. Even you got a locked one, you can still find out software ( plenty of them available on ebay) to unlock it. Only problem is you won’t get technical support from apple if things goes bad.
